tobyMac Named Artist of the Year At 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards By Ginny McCabe
This year’s Dove-Award winning “Artist of the Year” tobyMac continues to impress audiences with his own style, sound, and with a solid commitment to spreading the Gospel message that is reaching millions, worldwide.
tobyMac (Toby McKeehan) was first known as one third of the dcTalk, where he was part of the group from 1989 until the group announced its hiatus in 2000. Now, for nearly a decade, tobyMac has furthered his career as a successful solo artist, releasing three studio albums, including Momentum (2001), Welcome to Diverse City (2004), and Portable Sounds (2007), as well as two remixed versions of his first two albums, titled Re:Mix Momentum, and Renovating Diverse City. In 2008, tobyMac released his latest project and first live album, Alive and Transported, which is available as a live CD/DVD package. The concert recorded for the album was also played on Monday, June 9th, 2008 (for one night only) at participating movie theaters across the country. For participating theaters, visit www.thebiggerpicture.us/tobymac/.
His musical style can be described as urban hip-hop, and those who have seen him in concert already know that his live show takes on a life of its own. That style, along with his Christian character and motivation has taken him a long way, earning him numerous accolades and career achievements. Yet, if you’ve ever met him in person, you quickly recognize he is a man of great humility.
With over 8 million career scans and sell out tours, Portable Sounds is tobyMac’s latest and highest solo debut ever on the Billboard Top 200 Chart (No. 10) and hitting No. 1 on SoundScan’s Contemporary Christian overall chart in its first week as well, the project has scanned over 350,000 units, which only scratch the surface of his achievements. All three of tobyMac’s solo projects have received numerous GMA Dove Awards, as well as, multiple Grammy nominations. In addition, Momentum (2001) and Welcome to Diverse City (2004), both were awarded an RIAA Gold certification. Alive and Transported, the new live concert DVD & CD from tobyMac and DiverseCity, hit stores on May 27th.
When tobyMac is not on the road touring, or recording, he spends time at home in Franklin, TN with his wife, Amanda and their five children.
